How to teach girls to hit bike jumps (bring in the expert)

13 year old Hannah getting air time

Last week I coached at the Montana Girls Mountain Bike Camp with many of the Jr Girls that have been coming to the regular Tuesday night rides. This week was awesome because the girls got a lot of one-on-one attention with such a small group and I drove them all over to new trails they haven't been on yet.

Another bonus was having my son Alex Bardsley be a guest coach on dirt jumping. The girls were all eager to learn how to clear a gap and go off of jumps without wrecking. Alex kept a keen eye on the girls and was full of information on form and technique. I learned a ton too!

Ellie loves (LOVES) her big bro. Alex is a pretty great kid, and awesome biker too. Thanks for taking the time to coach us bud!

Coaching MTB skills at DIrt Divas in Helena Montana

"S" is also for Strong. Specialized Women's Bike ambassador coaching at Dirt Divas in Helena Montana.

I was super excited to travel to Helena Montana (my home town) to Coach at the 8th annual Women's  Dirt Diva Mountain Bike Clinic. Almost 100 ladies signed up for an awesome day of riding and fun.

The day began at 9 a.m. at Women’s Park in downtown Helena. All the ladies were be divided into small groups, each led by at least one female instructor.

I got to coach with Marah Connolle who is a Helena girl that rocks downhill. I loved working with her because she had an great attitude and sweet skills on the trail.

From the Women’s Park, we rode over C.R. Anderson Elementary School for bike skill drills and instruction in Fields. It was super cool to look around and see almost a hundred women rocking bunny hops, water bottle pick-up, obstacle clearing and straight line drills.

In our group, we focused on Body Position for;
 *Braking
*Turning Skills
*Wheel Lifts
*Balance
*Changing Gears
*Track Stands and Bunny Hops
*Switchback Skills - (looking ahead, flat vs hill)
My daughter Ellie was the youngest rider at 13yrs. We had so much fun bringing 15yr old Alli over from Missoula too!

After the morning skills clinic, we rode back through Helena to the Women’s Park for lunch provided by Taco del Sol.

Great information sessions on bike maintenance, flat repair, stretching, Hammer nutrition and sports taping lasted for about an hour while everyone rested in the shade and hydrated for the afternoon single track ride.

Awesome Helena women that mentor mountain biking - Jackie Yamanaka, Greta Elston and Angie Grove of Great Divide Cyclery.
In the afternoon, we headed out to the trails. I put all the little skills into play for the women. We rode up Eagle Scout, 2006 and Entertainment.
Ah-Oh! Bike mechanical difficulties ....luckily this rock worked to snap the chain link back into place.

Thankfully we were in the shade on the uphill and got the top for an awesome view! Our group of ladies rocked super fast and flowy downhill back down to Davis Gulch. Too Much FUN!

Mt Alpha Mountian Bike Skills Clinic - Jr Update

Teenagers Represent!

Ellie and Hannah rocking the skills clinic - Photo Jen Lorenzen

On Saturday my team Mt Alpha put on a huge women's only mountain bike skills clinic. We had ages 11 to 60 sign up and had waiting lists since it filled up so quickly. With 60 riders ready to rock the Rattlesnake Corridor, we started at 8am with check in packets and awesome coffee from Black Coffee Roasters and pastries from Le Petite. All the women gathered in the heart of the Rattlesnake corridor at the beautiful Ten Spoon Winery for mountain bike fun.

Our day began with girls ages 11-16.

We rode up to the Gravel Pits to rotate from skill stations
from 9:30 - 11:30am

  • Climbing Up hills
  • Descending Downhill
  • Jumping your bike
  • Obstacle Course
  • Corners and Pumping
The girls worked on keeping the butts back on downhill's.
One hard concept to learn is keeping your feet parallel on downhill's. It can be hard for beginners to feel comfortable to stand while descending, and many want to sit with one leg down and one up. This just takes time on the bike to get, but after you learn it - it becomes second nature when riding downhill.

Before the clinic I surveyed the girls about what they wanted to learn - many of them said JUMPS!
"I want to know how to go off of JUMPS!"
12 year old Elise working the jump line. Great body positioning girl!
